The Upper and Lower Blepharoplasty Procedure

Upper and lower eyelid surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia to help you maintain optimal comfort during the surgery. For the upper eyelids, Dr. Maffi places a small incision in the natural crease to remove or reposition tissue. For the lower eyelids, the incision is made below the lash line. During surgery, your fat pads are adjusted to smooth the area, and excess skin will be removed as needed. The combined procedure usually takes two to three hours and is performed on an outpatient basis.

Recovery & Results from a Upper and Lower Blepharoplasty

After surgery, you may experience swelling, bruising, or a feeling of tightness around the eyes. Most patients can return to normal activities within seven to ten days, although mild swelling can occur for a few weeks. Dr. Maffi closely monitors your healing to ensure you are progressing comfortably and achieving optimal results.

What is Upper and Lower Blepharoplasty?

Upper and lower blepharoplasty is a combination of two procedures that address signs of aging around the eyes. Upper blepharoplasty removes excess skin and fat from the upper eyelids to improve sagging, while lower blepharoplasty reduces under-eye puffiness and allows for a softer appearance. When performed together, these procedures rejuvenate the entire eye area, enhancing your appearance without altering your natural expressions.

Who is a Candidate for Combined Eyelid Surgery?

You may be a strong candidate for combined upper and lower blepharoplasty if you are concerned with drooping upper lids, excess eyelid skin, persistent puffiness, or hollowness under the eyes. During your consultation at our Scottsdale office, Dr. Maffi will assess your eyelid anatomy and listen to your concerns to determine the best surgical plan for your needs.

Resources to Support You at Every Step

Your experience with us extends beyond the procedure itself. We believe exceptional care starts with thoughtful preparation. Everything here is tailored to help you feel confident, informed, and fully supported.

What is the difference between eyelid surgery and blepharoplasty?

There’s no difference between eyelid surgery and blepharoplasty; these terms actually refer to the same procedure. Blepharoplasty is the medical term, while “eyelid surgery” is what many patients and doctors call it informally. Both describe the process of reshaping and rejuvenating the eyelids by removing excess skin, fat, or muscle to give the eyes a more refreshed appearance.

How long does it take to recover from blepharoplasty?

Most patients return to normal activities within one to two weeks. Mild swelling or bruising is common during the first few days, but usually improves quickly. Cold compresses and keeping the head elevated can help speed up the healing process. Stitches, if used, are typically removed within a week. Your surgeon provides detailed post-op instructions to ensure the smoothest recovery possible.

Can blepharoplasty fix hooded eyes?

Yes, blepharoplasty is one of the most common solutions for hooded eyes. The surgery lifts and removes extra skin on the upper eyelid that causes a hooded or droopy appearance. By tightening and smoothing this area, blepharoplasty can help your eyes look more open, awake, and youthful, sometimes even improving your field of vision if the extra skin is obstructing sight.

What is the best age for blepharoplasty?

There’s no single “best age” for blepharoplasty. The right time depends on your unique anatomy and goals. Many people start considering eyelid surgery in their 40s or 50s, when the effects of aging around the eyes begin to appear. However, younger adults may choose blepharoplasty if hooded or droopy eyelids run in their family or cause functional issues. A consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon is the best way to find out if it’s the right time for you.

What not to do after blepharoplasty?

After blepharoplasty, avoid rubbing your eyes, strenuous exercise, and exposing your healing eyelids to direct sunlight until cleared by your surgeon. Do not wear contact lenses or eye makeup right away; these should only be resumed after your surgeon says it’s safe. Smoking, consuming alcohol, or using blood-thinning medications can slow healing or increase the risk of complications. Always follow your surgeon’s detailed aftercare instructions for the smoothest recovery.
